Images conjured of Cowboys and Indians have been imprinted in our minds since childhood. What do they mean to all of us today? Even the language we use today surrounding them has evolved. While tales of the Wild West have been romantic, adventurous and even nostalgic, they have a darker and even painful side. How do we digest both sides? In celebration of the amazing spirit of the west, SpaceCraft visual and performing artists are presenting works that explore this layered theme in a multitude of directions, literal, figurative, serious, playful, political.

With Thanksgiving around the corner, it’s the time of year to gather and share our goods with you. From paintings to sculpture, mixed media to video installations, spoken word to live bands, we invite you to join us at our artistic feast and bring your own insights to our table. It’s gonna be a Rootin Tootin Good Time!

Adobe Books Backroom Gallery is excited to present Keep It Cherried, a two-person exhibition featuring artists Michelle Guintu and Joe Roberts. The show marks these San Francisco artists’ first exhibition at the Backroom Gallery, brought together based on their shared impulse to create through their own obsessions. Based on inherently introverted personal infatuations, the artists will show painting, drawing, and low-budget assemblage.

Michelle Guintu combines facets of cultural identification and transcendent personal expression, without polish or refinement. Everyday cultural detritus (R. Kelly, McDonalds, Sonic The Hedgehog, canon of Abstraction) realize new potentials in their transformations. The collusion of the discarded distills a Lynchian consciousness, rendering a surreal and nightmarish craft.

“Joe Roberts is a stoney-eyed, scrapped out genius and he’s done art for some of my favorite records in recent memory besides. I can’t exactly say he throws wild parties, yet somehow I’m always at his house when they happen. He’s not allowed inside any bar that I’ve ever tried to meet him at. Yet somehow he’s like the giggly heart of it all, speaking out of the side of his mouth like “you need to be IN on this shit”, like somehow halfway through a pudding-pack he just figured out the connection between Hanna-Barbera and the JFK assassination.” -Matt Jones

Making something out of nothing is the prime artistic act. The conjunction of various media is an integral element in the work of Joe Roberts. Likewise, Michelle Guintu’s various abstractions push up against her more explicitly themed work. Neither harbor pretensions about their work or the impetus that pushes them to create. They sophisticate their work into scale – their sense of scale is innate, from Joe’s assembled dioramas to Michelle’s paintings on paper.

In a gallery we’re accustomed to assuming that what we see is finished: a completed thought, a branded message, an assuredly executed product. However, what happens in the studio is often far from the conclusions usually presented to the public. There are failed experiments, unfinished sentences, inconclusive outcomes. There is a sense of journeying into uncharted territory, a glimmer of an idea not yet seen or stated. This is what keeps us coming back!

For “The Unresolved”, Spacecraft’s October theme show, we’re seeking to share with you some of the process; a few of the ideas not yet crystallized. It’s going to be vulnerable, and maybe a little messy, but hopefully brimming with new discoveries.

For “Chain Gang” the artists of Spacecraft sent an e-mail to a friend inviting them to show, who in turn invited one of their friends. Though you’ll have to come out tomorrow night to see the full results of this experiment, here’s a sneak peek at one of the artists who’ll be showing tomorrow night!

Julia Litman-Cleper is an emerging artist interested in the machine-body and biological interface. Her work searches for new ways to understand living/non-living or mechanical/artificial dichotomies. She studied art, science and technology at UC Davis and also works in video, music and draws comics. Her favorite book at the moment is “Brain Plague” by Joan Slonczewski.

Spacecraft’s August guest musician, Sam Chase is performing at Burning Man!

This will be one of those awesome mornings at Burning Man that you’ll want to remember. Not like the other 6 mornings that you will probably want to forget. So come and sit and listen and drink coffee and cocktails and get away from the morning heat with the soothing sounds of The Sam Chase.

Spacecraft artist, Aoife Crofts is taking part in a group exhibition, with several of her countrymen, or should we say countrywomen. San Francisco Art Beat collaborates with Arc Gallery & Studios for the group show, “Finding Our Place”, featuring four Irish artists living and working in San Francisco; curated by San Francisco Art Beat in conjunction with “Neither Here Nor There,” sponsored by ArtSpan & Kearny Street Workshop.

“Finding Our Place” presents artwork by four emerging Irish artists currently living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area: Janet Williams, Aoife O’Sullivan, Maggie McKeever, and Aoife Crofts. The group exhibition explores the artists’ experimentation in their artwork after influence from the unique arts styles and environments of their new location, San Francisco and Bay Area. In some instances, these Irish artists have also lived in other countries or are from families of various cultures, illustrating a greater depth and complexity of the theme in their work. The show aims to show that many artists of various nationalities form communities to exchange ideas and experiences, while rejecting antiquated desires to organize or classify artists to particular cultures and ethnicities. In this way, their photographs and paintings explore similar ideas and themes of cultural fluidity, hybridization, and cross-cultural influences as found in “Neither Here Nor There.”

Classes are held with only two students at a time, so you can get the most out of your hands on training, in one of the easiest welding processes to learn.
